Dengue Season Care: What Families Should Prepare at Home

Dengue is common during rainy season because mosquitoes breed more easily around standing water. For families, the most important things are early fever monitoring, enough fluids, safe medicine choices, and knowing when to see a doctor.
What families can do at home
1. Check temperature regularly
Fever is one of the common signs of dengue. A digital thermometer helps parents monitor temperature clearly, especially at night or when symptoms change.
2. Keep the patient hydrated
Encourage water or oral rehydration drinks. Dehydration can make dengue more dangerous, so parents should watch urine amount, dry mouth, weakness, or dizziness.
3. Use fever medicine safely
For suspected dengue, fever is usually managed with paracetamol/acetaminophen. Avoid ibuprofen, aspirin, or other NSAIDs because they may increase bleeding risk in dengue.
4. Keep hygiene items ready
Alcohol wipes can help clean small items like thermometer tips or surfaces before use. Do not use alcohol wipes to wipe the whole body for fever.
5. Use comfort care only when suitable
Vapour rub may help comfort if the child also has stuffy nose or cough symptoms, but it does not treat dengue. Use only according to age guidance and avoid applying near the nose, eyes, mouth, or broken skin.
Warning signs: see a doctor quickly
Go to a clinic or hospital if there is severe stomach pain, repeated vomiting, bleeding nose or gums, black stool, extreme weakness, difficulty breathing, cold hands/feet, confusion, or signs of dehydration. WHO advises watching for severe symptoms and contacting a doctor as soon as they appear.
